News. The "Big Spoon" installed today

Figueres, 31 December 2004

Montse Aguer, Dalí Centenary Commissioner, Joan Manuel Sevillano, Dalí Foundation Managing Director, Josep Playà, Dalí Centenary Commissioner for Figueres City Hall and a goodly representation from Figueres City Council were all in attendance today for inauguration of the final site of the Big Spoon on Ronda Firal road by the Mayor of Figueres, Joan Armangué.

The Mayor and Vice-president of the Foundation suggests that the A-2 roadway access that runs through Figueres from the Rally-Sud (the site of the cypress tree designed by Òscar Tusquets and taking inspiration from the Dalinian oeuvre) to Avinguda Perpinyà (location of the dome made by some of the city’s students) be named Avinguda Salvador Dalí after the artist.

These two sculptural features — together with the Grup 69 mural in Ordis square, the anomorphism situated on the lower section of the Rambla promenade and designed by Medina-Campeny and this Big Spoon – form part of the city’s homage to Dalí with five installations that leave a highly visible and permanent reminder of Dalí Centenary in the city of his birth. Figueres had until now no street dedicated to its artistic genius, except for the square in front of the museum, where he shared his name with that of Gala. In the course of the event, Montse Aguer and Josep Playà noted some of the main features of the 38-metre-long spoon, created on the occasion of the exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1979.
