Ornamental Spectre of the Erection

Unique Original Work

Description

Date:
1933-1934
Technique:
Plaster
Dimensions:
Unknown
Location:
Unknown

This is a previously unpublished work, identified from this photograph by an unknown author. It is possible that the setting is the interior of the Galerie Jacques Bonjean in Paris, during the Exposition Dalí, held in June and July 1934. In fact, the catalogue of this exhibition lists two plaster sculptures by Dalí: Nu Féminin hystérique et aérodynamique and Spectre ornemental de l’érection. It is reasonable to attribute the latter title to the sculpture considered here. On the basis of photographs dated ca. 1933 conserved in the Centre for Dalinian Studies, it can also be said that Dalí made this work in plaster at his house in Portlligat. The iconography is closely related to that of several of Dalí’s illustrations for Les Chants de Maldoror, exhibited at the bookshop Les Quatre Chemins in Paris at the same time as the exhibition held at the Galerie Jacques Bonjean.
