Observations

According to a conversation between Antoni Pitxot and Salvador Dalí recorded in Ignacio Gómez de Liaño’s "Mi tiempo, escritos de arte y literatura" (Madrid, Libertarias, 1984, p. 28), this work is known as "A Removal Van". The title is a reference to the following lines from André Breton’s "Secrets of the Magical Surrealist Art" in "The First Manifesto of Surrealism" (1924): "Surrealism will introduce you to death which is a secret society. It will glove your hand, burying within it the profound M with which the word Memory starts. Do not forget to make proper arrangements for your will: personally, I ask to be conducted to the cemetery in a removal van. Let my friends destroy every last copy of my "Discourse on the Paucity of Reality"."
