The presentation was given by Antoni Pitxot, Director of the Dal\u00ed Theatre-Museum, and Montse Aguer, Director of the Centre for Dalinian Studies.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">The work will be exhibited in the Treasure Room of the Theatre-Museum from Tuesday 12 April 2011.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong><span style=\"color: #632423; font-size: 10pt\">Technical description<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 35.35pt 0pt 0cm\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Title: <em><a href=\"\/cataleg_raonat\/fitxa_obra.html?text=mel&amp;obra=185&amp;lang=en\">Study for \u201cHoney is Sweeter than Blood\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Year: 1926<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Technique: <\/span><span style=\"color: #403152; font-size: 10pt\">Oil on wood panel<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Measurements: 36 x 44 cm<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Catalogue Raisonn\u00e9 file no.: <a href=\"\/cataleg_raonat\/fitxa_obra.html?text=mel&amp;obra=185&amp;lang=en\">185<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">Inv. no. 0483<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 10pt\">See it in the Catalogue Raisonn\u00e9 on the Dal\u00ed Foundation website:<\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong><span style=\"color: #632423; font-size: 10pt\">Context of the work<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-size: 10pt\">We know from correspondence with Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca and other friends of the painter such as Sebasti\u00e0 Gasch that Dal\u00ed used to refer to the now-disappeared painting as the <em>Apparatus Forest<\/em>, while on this oil painting we can clearly read in the lower left-hand corner: <em>Etude pour &#8220;Le miel est plus douce que la sang&#8221; <\/em>[sic]. The highly poetical expression of the title takes its inspiration, as Dal\u00ed explains in <em>The Secret Life of Salvador Dal\u00ed<\/em>, from words used by L\u00eddia de Cadaqu\u00e9s:\u00a0\u201c[\u2026] L\u00eddia began to pluck it, and soon the whole room was covered in feathers. When this operation was over, she cleaned the chicken, and with her fingers dripping with blood, she began to pull out its viscera which she arranged neatly on a separate dish <\/span><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-size: 10pt\">on the crystal table, where I had laid a very expensive book of facsimiles of the drawings of Giovanni Bellini. Observing that I jumped up anxiously to remove the book against the possibility of splashing, Lydia smiled bitterly, and said, \u201cBlood does not spot\u201d and then she immediately added this sentence, which a malicious expression in her eyes charged with erotic hidden meanings, \u201cBlood is sweeter than honey. I,\u201d she went on, \u201cam blood, and honey is all the other women! My sons\u2026\u201d (this she added in a low voice) \u201cat this moment are against blood and are running after honey.<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-size: 10pt\">\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-size: 10pt\">This work is also of great interest due to its being the study for a now-disappeared painting called <em>Honey is Sweeter than Blood<\/em>, dating from 1927 [cat. no. <a href=\"\/cataleg_raonat\/fitxa_obra.html?text=194&amp;obra=194\">194<\/a>]. In the <em>Study <\/em>we present today we might particularly note the same iconographic features that make the finished work so special: the apparatuses, the severed head, the blood, the rotting donkey, etc., features that refer us back to the painter\u2019s \u201cnew aesthetic\u201d and in which we can observe the first clear references to Surrealism. This \u201cnew aesthetic\u201d is the one formally announced in some of his articles published in <em>L\u2019Amic de les Arts<\/em>, such as \u201cSant Sebasti\u00e0\u201dor<em> \u201c<\/em>La meva amiga i la platja\u201d,and also discussed with his friend the poet Garc\u00eda Lorca in the letters they exchanged over that period. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-size: 10pt\">We are likewise aware that Dal\u00ed\u2019s pictorial work cannot be separated from his written work. This characteristic trait of the painter\u2019s trajectory arose at this very time, while he was gestating <em>Honey is Sweeter than Blood<\/em> and therefore engaged in this study for that work. These paintings and the text are indicative of a turning point in Dal\u00ed\u2019s art following a period of several years in which he had been experimenting with a broad diversity of modern and contemporary styles. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%\"><em><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-size: 10pt\">Honey is Sweeter than Blood<\/span><\/em><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-size: 10pt\"> and the study for it are thus works that mark a process of stylistic change in which there appear some elements from the previous period, such as the severed heads that reveal to us the stamp of his new classicism, and particularly the influence of Picasso (<em>Table in front of the Sea<\/em>, 1926 [cat. no. <a href=\"\/cataleg_raonat\/fitxa_obra.html?text=187&amp;obra=187\">187<\/a>]; <em>Still Life by Moonlight<\/em>, 1926 [cat. no. <a href=\"\/cataleg_raonat\/fitxa_obra.html?text=196&amp;obra=196\">196<\/a>]; <em>Composition with Three Figures. \u201cNeo-Cubist Academy\u201d<\/em>, 1926 [cat. no. <a href=\"\/cataleg_raonat\/resultats_cerca.html?text=171\">171<\/a>]); objects that become \u201cpieces of apparatus\u201d and that show Dal\u00ed\u2019s interest in \u201cmachinism\u201d, such as <em>Depart. &#8220;Homage to Fox Newsreel&#8221;<\/em>, 1926 [cat. no. <a href=\"\/cataleg_raonat\/resultats_cerca.html?text=154\">154<\/a>],\u00a0<em>Still Life by Mauve Moonlight<\/em>, 1926 [cat. no. <a href=\"\/cataleg_raonat\/fitxa_obra.html?text=186&amp;obra=186\">186<\/a>] or <em>Still Life. \u201cInvitation to Dream\u201d<\/em>, 1926 [cat. no. <a href=\"\/cataleg_raonat\/fitxa_obra.html?text=172&amp;obra=172\">172<\/a>]). We also have the initial influences of other contemporary artists such as Joan Mir\u00f3, Yves Tanguy and particularly \u00a0Giorgio de Chirico. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; line-height: 150%\"><span style=\"line-height: 150%; font-size: 10pt\">An attentive reading of the article \u201cSant Sebasti\u00e0\u201d leads us directly to the interpretation that Dal\u00ed attached, particularly, to De Chirico\u2019s works. It was they that provided Dal\u00ed with the basis for <em>Apparatus and Hand<\/em>, 1927 [cat. no. <a href=\"\/cataleg_raonat\/fitxa_obra.html?text=195&amp;obra=195\">195<\/a>] and for <em>Honey is Sweeter than Blood<\/em> and the study made for it. The visual impact is also evident in the \u201capparatuses\u201d to be found in these works, as well as in their strong, harsh lighting and dark shadows. The result is this new scenario furnished with elements that have a stylistic affinity with Tanguy and Mir\u00f3 (though not necessarily deriving directly from them).
