This work is thus titled because Dalí liked the repetition of the form of the nose of the central figure of Michelangelo’s Pieta in the form of rocks, thus constituting an echo image. The greenish tones of the canvas, a little depressing, correspond to the period in which Gala’s decline becomes clear, when Dalí’s work is the result of deep melancholy and sadness on remembering the past. It was at this time when he also often used Michelangeloesque iconography.
