Conservation and restoration of the elephant sculptures - Fundació Gala

The Conservation and Restoration Department’s annual preventive conservation programme includes the inspection of outdoor elements and works, such as the elephant sculptures located in the garden of Púbol Castle.

External conservators-restorers from ECRA S.L. – specialists in the conservation and restoration of archaeological, architectural and monumental heritage – conducted the inspection of these cement sculptures and handled the cleaning. During the inspection, they noticed a crack in one of the legs of one of the four elephants in the garden, caused by expansion of the sculpture’s internal iron frame.

The intervention consisted of chemically and mechanically cleaning the elephant, as well as cleaning and repairing the crack and sealing it with restoration mortar
