Restoration - Restoration interventions

Restoration of Gala's boat

The periodic review and maintenance programme for works exhibited outdoors reveals what treatments need to be carried out and their priority. One example of this is the complete restoration carried out in 2011 of Gala's boat, an important museum piece which Dalí installed above his Cadillac, in the centre of the main courtyard. The chief problem presented was that of rainwater which accumulated in the hull. For nearly two months, the restorers and a team of technicians coordinated by the Department worked on a 14-metre scaffold to repair the metal structures, reinforce the wooden hull, restore the polyester parts of the boat, and clean the sail and the motor which opens the umbrella positioned above it, all with highly satisfactory results.
