Dalí printed this drypoint etching on celluloid with graphite powder on laid paper during a period marked by his close friendship and profound artistic affinity with Federico García Lorca, who made his first visit to Cadaqués during Holy Week in 1925. The print is part of a series of studies that reflect the artist’s admiration for the Catalan Futurist poet Joan Salvat-Papasseit (1894-1924), who died the previous year. His second collection, L’irradiador del port i les gavines (1921), is notable for its maritime inspiration. Salvat-Papasseit’s poems were considered avant-garde for their visual and typographic resources, use of isolated words, and other traces of Cubist and Futurist influence. The print is dedicated to Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre, a Canarian painter and friend of Dalí, whose series Poema del mar (also known as Poema del Atlántico) was exhibited in Madrid that same year, 1925.
