News. HM The King of Spain opens the Dalí Year

HM The King of Spain presided over the meeting of the National Commission of the Commemoration of Salvador Dalí’s birth Centenary at the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres and declared the Dalí Year to have officially begun.

Other leading figures taking part in the event included HRH Princess Cristina, who is a member of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, the Minister of Culture, H. Excellency Mrs. Pilar del Castillo, the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya (the Government of Catalonia), most Honourable Mr. Jordi Pujol, the Mayor of Figueres, Illustrious Mr. Joan Armangué, the President of the Foundation and of the Executive Committee for the centenary celebration, Mr. Ramon Boixadós and Mrs. Montse Aguer, Commissionner for the Dalí Centennial and Director of the Centre for Dalinian Studies. In her turn, she highlighted the fact that the centennial celebrations will raise awareness of and provide new insights into the life, work and thinking of the great artist.

The programme of activities that was officially sanctioned is divided into four parts: the first one containing exhibitions to be held in Spain and abroad, the second one, with symposiums and congresses; the third one, with the publication of Salvador Dalí’s complete written works in Catalan and Spanish (eight volumes that will include essays, novels, plays and poetry). One of the most important contributions of the centenary will be the publication of an on-line Catalogue Raisonné of the painter’s work, promoted and executed by the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation. Year Dalí 2004 commemorates the centenary of the birth of Salvador Dalí i Domènech (Figueres, 11 May 1904 – 23 January 1989). The activities programmed for the Dalí Year 2004 are of an international nature and will take place throughout 2004 and part of year 2005.

The National Commission, presided over by Their Majesties The King and Queen of Spain, is responsible for the overall organisation of Dalí Year 2004, and will be programming, promoting and co-ordinating the most important activities being held. Represented on the Commission are the Foundation itself and all the public authorities, as well as numerous museums and other Spanish and international organisations and individuals with links to the artist’s life and work.
