Description

The visit is structured around Salvador Dalí’s artistic work at Púbol Castle. The most surrealist features are noted from various aspects: architecture, painting, design, sculpture and artistic objects. We will be taking a closer look at Salvador Dalí’s most private world and appreciating the entire creative effort he put into the Castle solely for his wife and muse, Gala.

Objectives

  • To discover Púbol Castle in an entertaining, fun and thought-provoking way.
  • To find out about the relationship between Gala and Salvador Dalí and to understand them as two important personalities of the 20th century.
  • To situate Salvador Dalí and Gala within the context of the most important events of the 20th century and to assess at all times the close relationship between the life, way of thinking and artistic oeuvre.
  • To identify the features that make Púbol Castle a different and at the same time original museum area.
  • To analyse Dalí’s artistic background from a stylistic and multidisciplinary viewpoint and to relate it to contemporary artistic and socio-cultural movements.
  • To gain a closer acquaintance with Gala.
  • To foster the pleasure of observing, finding out about and discovering an artistic space.
  • To encourage active participation in the discovery of new features, on the basis of discussion, own viewpoint and the critical spirit to which any discovery or stimulus can give rise.
  • To respect the opinions of others and different points of view upon noting the various ways of grasping and understanding the world.
  • To respect the artistic and human setting.

Suggestions for Follow-up Work

  • Preparing an interview with Salvador Dalí and Gala to raise all the questions that may have been suggested by the visit to Púbol Castle.
  • Undertaking an overview of 20th century art using artistic examples contemporary with Salvador Dalí to find out the influences they had on each other.
  • Working on the more interdisciplinary aspect of Salvador Dalí, taking the features of Púbol Castle as points of reference: architectural, design, sculptural, pictorial, landscapist, etc.
  • Drawing up a chronological diagram of the 20th century, interrelating the historical phenomena with Dalí’s various artistic periods.
  • Undertaking a deeper study of the figure and the oeuvre of Dalí from the spheres of literature, history, history of art, philosophy, cinema, computing (internet: consult the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation website: www.salvador-dali.org. We would particularly recommend consulting the Catalogue raisonné of paintings (1910-1930).
  • Completing this visit with visits to the Dalí Theatre-Museum and the Salvador Dalí House in Portlligat (Cadaqués).
