Exhibition Cycle

On the 130th anniversary of her birth (in 1894 in Kazan, Russia), the time has come to talk about Gala. And we do so by way of an innovative discourse woven through fashion. A season of small-format exhibitions conceived in three collections (spring-summer, haute couture and autumn-winter) and a final exhibition with some of the most emblematic pieces from her personal archive, in which haute couture designs by Elsa Schiaparelli and Michel Goma rub shoulders with outfits from Hubert de Givenchy or Oleg Cassini, but also with label-free garments which remind us that her image goes far beyond the label, and is the reflection of a unique personality, free of constraints, who, above all, always remained true to herself.

I want to go down in history as a legend. When everything is over, when all that is now murky becomes clear, when some time has passed, people will speak of me—well or badly. But right now, I don’t want anyone to say anything.

Gala

When the ultralocal becomes universal

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Dalí Theatre-Museum, we present a short chronology with the key moments of the construction of this unique building, an icon of Dalí’s art and of the city of Figueres. The aim is at once to highlight Dalí’s constant involvement in the decision-making and the construction process of his museum and to present the invaluable documentary testimony of his friend and collaborator, the photographer Melitó Casals (Meli).

In this museum, one will find not only the majority of my work, but also the entirety of my genius.

Salvador Dalí

Velázquez, Vermeer, Rafael

There are three names in the history of art that were transcendent for Dalí, almost obsessively so: Velázquez, Vermeer and Raphael.

In this museum, one will find not only the majority of my work, but also the entirety of my genius.

Salvador Dalí

The Dalinian vision

We show Salvador Dalí on an intimate journey as a visitor of museums and viewer of works of art, with which we hope to convey his unique perception of the world around him. In these photographs we see him engaging in dialogue with his artistic guiding lights, subsequently reflected in his own creations, as evidenced by the works in the exhibition My Favourite Painters: Velázquez, Vermeer, Raphael.
We also focus on Dalí’s gaze, on his eye, a true “soft photographic apparatus”, a particular, singular and coherent gaze, to understand what this “knowing how to look” means.

In this museum, one will find not only the majority of my work, but also the entirety of my genius.

Celebrate Gala at the Castle of Púbol.

On August 26th, a very special event will take place at the Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol, commemorating the anniversary of Gala’s birth.

The show, titled L’esperit lliure: Gala sota la mirada de Paul ÉluardThe Free Spirit: Gala through the Eyes of Paul Éluard-, is directed by artist Fiona Morrison and combines poetry with music and a distinctive staging. The cello of Nerea de Miguel and the electronic music of MAGAM blend with the reading, in the original language, of the poems that Paul Éluard wrote in the book À toute épreuve in 1930.

The doors of the Gala Dalí Castle will open at 7:00 p.m., and after the performance visitors will be free to explore the Castle, where attendees will also be offered a glass of Perelada rosé cava.

This year dedicated to filmmaker Luis Buñuel, on the 125th anniversary of his birth

For the fourth edition, the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres is organizing, together with the Diòptria Film Club, the Surrealist Film Series. This year it is dedicated to the filmmaker from Calanda, Luis Buñuel, in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of his birth. The event is held in collaboration with the Figueres City Council.

On Thursdays in August, at 9:30 p.m., in the Gala-Salvador Dalí Square, some of the filmmaker’s most iconic films will be screened: on the 7th, The Exterminating Angel (1962); on the 14th, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972); and on the 21st, The Phantom of Liberty (1974). All activities are free of charge.

This year, the Surrealist Film Series will feature an inaugural session inside the Dalí Theatre-Museum, with the presence of Jordi Xifra, director of the Buñuel Center in Calanda and expert on the life and work of the Aragonese filmmaker. He will engage in a conversation with cultural journalist Agus Izquierdo in an intimate format that will take place in the museum’s Lòggies courtyard.

Additionally, coinciding with the final weeks of the 50th anniversary of the Dalí Theatre-Museum, visitors will be able to enjoy the temporary exhibitions The Soft Photographic Apparatus, My Favorite Painters, and view the latest acquisition by the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation, The Birth of Liquid Anxieties (1932). This event is also free, though prior registration is required.
