The Conservation and Restoration Department is responsible for all aspects related to the works’ conservation whilst on loan and exhibition, with the aim of minimizing the inherent risk factors any time an artwork is moved.

Various preparatory processes are carried out to ensure optimum conservation conditions for the works. Before the loan of a work is approved, the piece’s state of conservation is reviewed and assessed. Following the loan’s approval, the Conservation and Restoration Department begins the process of preparing the work for departure. This includes, in addition to the review of its state of conservation, drawing up the corresponding condition reports and digitally mapping any damage to the paint, as well as reviewing the condition of the frame protecting it.

Prevention as a priority

To ensure the pieces’ security and conservation at the place of destination, one of the restorers travels to the exhibition site as a courier. That person is tasked with supervising the arrival of the loaned works, checking their condition and ensuring they are correctly positioned in the exhibition space, whether on walls or in display cases, in order to make sure the entire process runs smoothly.
