This is, perhaps, one of the artist’s least-known facets even today. The autobiographical texts stand out, from his earliest diaries dating from around 1919, to his ‘autobiography’, The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí, published in 1942, Diary of a Genius, from 1964, and The Unspeakable Confessions of Salvador Dalí, from 1973. His essays, which were especially prolific in the late 1920s and throughout the 1930s, constitute a first-rate theoretical corpus for gaining insight into his work and thought, as well as his understanding of artistic creation and the history of art. His collaborations with the written press were likewise striking and underwent a significant boom following his move to the US. In 1945, he launched the newspaper Dalí News to promote both his work and his persona.
