The Centre for Dalinian Studies aims to collect and catalogue audiovisual documents that are directly or indirectly related to Salvador Dalí. The collection consists of over 900 documents and includes films in which the artist was actively involved, whether in the conception of the film, direction, scriptwriting, or set design. It also features a vast archive of footage, including advertisements, interviews, and a wide range of reports. In parallel, the centre collects and catalogues an extensive selection of documentaries and television programs dedicated to the artist, focusing especially on his biography, artistic career, passions, and closest geographical and human surroundings.
After viewing and cataloguing the documents, the research phase begins in order to contextualize and expand knowledge about the content of the recordings. The significance of these materials is key, not only because of the firsthand information they provide but also because they allow a deeper understanding of Salvador Dalí’s most media-savvy side—he is considered one of the first artists to be aware of the power of the image. His presence in this medium is, in a way, inherent to Dalí’s creative process and becomes fundamental to understanding both the person and the work of Salvador Dalí.
On the other hand, the archive of sound documents contains a collection of more than 200 items in various formats, preserved between the Torre Galatea, the Portlligat House-Museum, and the Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol. This material allows us to explore the musical interests of Dalí and Gala, as well as to track Dalí’s involvement in certain projects and to see how the figure and work of the master have served as a source of inspiration for various album covers and musical compositions.
