Onan, a volume of poems by Georges Hugnet (1906-1974), was published by Éditions Surréalistes in Paris in 1934. Of the total print run, seventy-seven copies were illustrated with a frontispiece by Salvador Dalí, reproduced using rotogravure and printed by Ateliers Lacourière. According to the colophon, the book was printed on 10 June 1934, at the Grou-Radenez printing house. The book's title refers to an episode from Genesis (Old Testament). Onan, a rebellious character, is condemned to death by divine justice for wasting his seed and refusing to marry his brother Er's widow. (1) In this rotogravure, Dalí reflects his affinity with Hugnet’s verse, marked by sexual desire, loneliness, and exclusion. On a plate laden with ‘spasmo-graphisms,’ the artist inscribed the phrase: ‘“ESPASMO-GRAFIFISME” [sic] OBTENU AVEC LA MAIN GAUCHE PENDANT / QU’AVEC LA MAIN DROITE JE ME MASTURBE JUSQU’AU SANG / JUSQU’AU L’OS JUSQU’AU HÈLICES [sic] DU / CALICE’’ (‘Spasmo-graphism obtained with the left hand while / with the right hand I masturbate to the blood / to the bone to the helices of the / chalice’). The theme of onanism, present in the artist’s pictorial work since 1927, appears in a veiled form in Apparatus and Hand (Cat. P 195) and is openly addressed in his poem The Great Masturbator and in the oil painting Face of the Great Masturbator (Cat. P 235), both from 1930. __________ (1) King James Bible, Genesis 38:9-10: ‘And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.’
