René Char’s poem Artine was published by Éditions Surréalistes in Paris with a frontispiece by Dalí, based on a pencil and India ink drawing reproduced in rotogravure on the first thirty copies. The artist’s figurative allusions refer to the great metaphysical questions concerning love and death evoked in the poem, dedicated ‘Au silence de celle qui laisse rêveur’ (To the silence of she who leaves one dreaming). René Char wrote Artine during September and October 1930 at the 3 Moulins hotel-restaurant, located at 8 ter, rue des Saules in Paris. Regarding its creation, he commented: ‘Artine was based on two characters: this young woman who drowned, Lola Abba, and the young girl I had met three or four years before on the lawn of a racetrack […] which I frequented as if it were magnetic ground.’ (1) The book’s colophon indicates that the firm of Ducros et Colas in Paris finished printing the book on 25 November 1930, just one day after the publication of L’Immaculée conception by the same publisher and printing house. This nominative copy, printed for Gala, is signed by the author and contains a dedication on the half-title page: ‘[T]o Gala / to Gala who turns up in / the night of splendid weather, / of surreal weather: the weather / of Gala, my only friend / René Char / January 12, 1931.’
