Cap de noia (Head of a Girl) is Dalí’s earliest known etching and dates from 1924, a period that coincides with the resumption of his association with Juan Núñez, his drawing teacher in Figueres and an expert engraver. The work was printed by Dalí himself on laid paper, a support on which he had previously printed, on the reverse, the only known print of Retrat del meu pare (Portrait of My Father) [OG 2]. During this period, Dalí’s sister, Anna Maria, was his principal model, so it is possible that this print is a portrait of her. The work comes from the collection of the French poet Paul Éluard, (1) one of the founders of the Surrealist movement and a renowned art collector. __________ (1) Lote 435 − Mädchenkopf. Gutekunst & Klipstein, Bern, Switzerland, 13−14.05.1958. In May 1958, the firm of Gutekunst & Klipstein held a major auction mostly comprising books and other materials related to the artistic movements of the early twentieth century, including some sixty items came from the collection of the French poet Paul Éluard, who died in 1952.
