This work, along with other sketches of female nudes, was created by Salvador Dalí around 1923, during his second year as a student in the Special School of Painting, Sculpture, and Engraving of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid, from which he was expelled for the entire academic year at the end of October 1923. It differs from most of his other studies in its intaglio technique, drypoint on celluloid that the artist printed on cardboard using graphite powder. It seems that Dalí learned this technique after returning to Figueres, where he resumed classes with his former drawing teacher, Juan Núñez. As he would recount years later, he became so passionate about engraving that his father was persuaded to buy him a printing press, which he installed in a room of the family home. This allowed him to learn all the engraving techniques, including – in his own words – ‘several original processes’ (1). __________ (1) Dalí, S., A.
