The 1925 ex libris bookplate was commissioned by Josep Puig Pujades (1883-1949), a writer and politician from Figueres. Dalí produced several proposals in India ink, as shown by the known preliminary studies, some of which are dated. (1) He was ultimately inspired by the words of ‘L’Empordà’, a Catalan sardana from 1908 with music by Enric Morera and lyrics by Joan Maragall, which tells the story of the love between a mermaid and a shepherd and is regarded as a mythic symbol of the birth of the Empordà region. Dalí, whose family were great sardana enthusiasts, knew these lines by heart. The final ink drawing was reproduced using letterpress printing on coated paper at a local printing firm in Figueres. Josep Puig Pujades, Dalí’s first patron, anticipated his future success in an article published under the pseudonym Puvis in Empordà Federal on 11 January 1919, in which he predicted a great future for the young artist. (2) Puig Pujades was a prominent Republican leader during the Spanish Civil War. At the end of the conflict he was forced into exile in France, and died in Perpignan in 1949. __________ (1) El País de Dalí, Figueres, Museo del Empordà, 2004, Ills. 29-31, p. 54-55. (2) Empordà Federal, weekly paper of the UFNR (Republican Nationalist Federal Union), 11.01.1919 [Biblioteca de Figueres].
