This proof pertains to one of Dalí’s drypoint engravings for the book L’Oncle Vicens, commissioned by the author Josep Puig Pujades, his first patron. Dalí created the book’s illustrations using a combination of techniques, alternating ink drawings with drypoint engravings on celluloid. The book was published in 1926 by the Poliglota imprint in Barcelona in a small edition of twenty copies. There is another proof of this illustration in the collection of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. This version was discarded by the artist himself, who wrote ‘NO SIRVE’ (‘no good’) in ink in the centre of the image.
