The burin engraving L’Enfant-sauterelle originated in an India ink and pencil drawing by Salvador Dalí. The title of this first limited edition of an individual print by the artist refers to his childhood and the phobia of grasshoppers that he recounts in his autobiography, The Secret Life (1942). (1) The existing documentation indicates that the print was made by Roger Lacourière in Paris between 1932 and 1933. The sharpness of the print is due to the technique used, burin engraving. The work is closely related to several of Dalí’s paintings from the same period, in particular the oil on wood from c. 1933, Moi-même à 10 ans quand j’étais l’enfant-sauterelle (complexe de castration) (Cat. P 208). __________ (1) Dalí, S., The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí, New York, Dial Press, 1942, pp. 128-131.
