This work comes from a drypoint etching on celluloid which Dalí printed on paper using graphite powder. The artist retouched the outline of the central figure with a pencil, thus accentuating the sense of movement of the two figures, a dynamism that contrasts with the immobility of the column – an allusion to Antiquity through a modern classicism in alignment with a return to order (rappel à l’ordre) movement. (1) This study is part of a series of works incorporating the figure of the sailor and predates the 1925 painting Venus i un mariner (Homenatge a Salvat-Papasseit) (Venus and a Sailor (Homage to Salvat-Papasseit)) [Cat.
