Pepín Vello is part of a group of works created from 1925 onwards by Dalí for a book project conceived with Federico García Lorca, entitled Los Putrefactos (The Putrefied), which was never completed. Unlike his other Putrefactos – drawings executed primarily in ink – Dalí incorporated the monotype technique into the creation of this hybrid work on laid paper. To achieve this, he applied a blended, greasy ink to a smooth plate, which he then pressed onto the underlying drawing. This deliberate intervention introduces an enigmatic and evocative element, reminiscent of the hazy, smoky atmosphere of the café gatherings the artist frequented during his ‘Madrid Period’ between 1922 and 1926. The work is dedicated ‘to Pepín Vello, affectionately Salvador Dalí 1925’. Pepín Vello was the nickname of José Bello Lasierra, a close friend of Dalí, Federico García Lorca, and Luis Buñuel – (1) a group that Dalí himself would later describe as ‘nonconformist, strident, and revolutionary’ (2) in his autobiography, The Secret Life. There are two other Putrefactos with the nickname Pepín: A Pepín, (3) and Crucifixión I, (4) both in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid and dated 1925. __________ (1) … [and] José María Hinojosa, Juan Vicense, Emilio Prados, among others. Querido Salvador, Querido Lorquito, Barcelona, Editorial Elba, 2013, p. 17. (2) Dalí, S., Vida Secreta, Editorial Poseidón, 1944, p. 246. (3) A Pepín, Putrefactos series, 1925, MNCARS. (4) Crucifixión I, Putrefactos series, 1925, MNCARS.
