Soon after Salvador Dalí joined the Surrealist group he was commissioned to create the frontispiece for the Second manifeste du surréalisme by the French poet André Breton. (1) For this illustration, Dalí made a drawing in pen and India ink and gouache, which was later reproduced in typography with stencil (pochoir) highlights. In the Second manifeste du surréalisme, Breton denounces the hypocrisy of society and asserts the need to rebel against the established order. In his text, the poet praises Lautréamont’s prose poem, Les Chants de Maldoror, which so inspired the Surrealists, and champions the freedom of imagination and thought, declaring: ‘The man who was mistakenly intimidated by a few monstrous historical failures is still free to believe in his freedom.’ (2) The book was published in a limited edition for the Club des Soixante by Éditions Kra of Paris, and according to the colophon, it was printed on June 20, 1930. __________ (1) The text was previously published in the twelfth and final issue of La Révolution surréaliste, 15 December 1929. (2) P.81-82.
