Dalí printed this proof on old laid paper. It is a maculature or second impression of an etching, of which this is the only known print. On the front of the sheet, the artist printed Cap de noia [OG 3] (Head of a Girl), signed by him in 1924. The use of both sides of the paper was a common practice during a period of intense experimentation, something also seen in other prints from his early period, such as the 1925 Retrat d’Anna Maria Dalí i el seu pare (Portrait of Anna Maria Dalí and her Father) [OG 4]. The maculature is related to Retrat del pare de l’artista (Portrait of the Artist’s Father), a charcoal drawing of similar composition – the father writing – which is part of the Museu de Montserrat collection (1). Although the drawing is larger than the print, the similarity between the two works bears witness to Dals tendency to work on a given theme using different creative processes at the same time. __________ (1) Retrat del pare de l’artista (Portrait of the Artist’s Father), 1925 -26, (43.4 x 31.3 cm). This charcoal and pastel drawing on paper from the collection of the Museu de Montserrat formerly belonged to the Cusí family, close friends of the Dalís. Considering the style of the drawing, and the likelihood that Dalí made it during the same period as the discarded work, the drawing can be dated to around 1924.
