Dalí painted himself dressed as a worker and wanted to record a rebellious and provocative attitude, with a cutting from the communist newspaper L’Humanité, which seems to certify his stated admiration for the idea of revolution and places him in a specific historical and ideological moment in time. The oil painting dates from 1923, though the collage of the newspaper within the cardboard is from the 24th of July 1928. The influence of Rafael Barradas is present, whose work he saw in the Ateneillo de L’Hospitalet, both in terms of the geometric structures of the paintings in the background of the workshop and in the newspaper itself or the schematic definition of the traits of the self-portrait. In this period, Dalí often painted self-portraits and summarised himself in his works with some clearly defined features: eyebrows, eyes and sideburns.
