Le dessin est la probité de l’art

Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres

Dalí included this quote from the neoclassical artist Ingres on a preparatory drawing for the painting Galarina, one of the most acclaimed works from his classical period. Drawing allowed him to express in a very genuine, and perhaps subtle, way the beauty, fantasy and, also, provocation inherent in his art. These works showcase a wide variety of styles, techniques and media, whilst at the same time evoking, just as his paintings do, the influences of many styles and references from the history of art. Drawing was also the discipline that enabled Dalí to excel in the fields of fashion, jewellery design, the performing arts and the illustration of works of universal literature. His designs on paper were often the first step in the execution of his works in the field of applied arts.
