Lecture by Bartolo Luque, research scientist and science communicator, as part of the exhibition Dalí and Optical Illusions
“There are things I can imagine and draw. There are things I can imagine but cannot draw. But could I draw something I cannot imagine?”
To answer this question posed by the artist István Orosz, we will explore some classic optical illusions and others of a more recent origin through the lens of neuroscience. We will discover how many artists, by manipulating these perceptual errors, have managed to create the unimaginable by tricking our senses.
We will illustrate pareidolia through the works of painters such as Arcimboldo, Dalí and Ocampo. We will explore ambiguity with Shigeo Fukuda, Bev Doolittle, Rob Gonsalves and Nobuyuki Kayahara. Finally, we will draw the undrawable through the impossible figures created by contemporary artists such as Oscar Reutersvärd, Jos de Mey, Leandro Erlich and Escher.
Bartolo Luque is a physicist, researcher and science communicator. He holds a PhD in Physical Sciences and is a professor at the Technical University of Madrid, where his research focuses on complex systems.
His career combines scientific research with teaching and science communication, particularly in the fields of physics, mathematics and astrobiology.
He has published numerous popular science books and articles and has contributed to various media outlets. In radio, he co-hosted the segment Los Sonidos de la Ciencia with astronomer Fernando Ballesteros on the programme No es un día cualquiera, broadcast by Radio Nacional de España (RNE), where he took part in more than a hundred episodes.
His work in teaching and science communication has been recognised with the Physics Award from the Royal Spanish Physics Society and the BBVA Foundation.
