The book of poems Cours naturel by Paul Éluard (1895–1952), was published by Éditions du Sagittaire in Paris in 1938 and is dedicated to Nusch, Éluard’s wife. It contains a frontispiece by Dalí, reproduced in etching on the first fifteen copies, printed on Chine and Hollande paper. According to the colophon, printing of the book was completed on 10 March 1938, at the Henri Jourde works in Paris. In the handbill for Cours naturel André Breton wrote: ‘To release, to deliver at the height of life and consciousness, as a great poet can at the age of twice twenty, not only the words of the still-savage tribe from their impure meanings but also human acts from what they possess of arbitrariness, irreparable combustion, and at the very least, vanity, in the great shimmering of midday on the wing of the “flaming” butterfly, against all odds and despite the immense pity of this time, deaf to the heart-rending cries that come from Republican Spain and from many other places, from this time – our time! – burying itself beneath the ruins of liberty and hope for the best, as well as of the most basic justice and dignity; to release, to liberate, to cause to shine forth what remains and will forever remain intact in the depths of the heart […] by a COURS NATUREL that nothing can interrupt…’ (1) This copy, number 7, printed on Hollande paper, includes a dedication on the title page ‘à Louis Broder / qui aime les libros / encore plus que moi, / Paul Éluard’ (To Louis Broder / who loves books / even more than I, / Paul Éluard). The flyleaf also features a bookplate by the French artist Benjamin Vautier.
