Va ser publicat per Éditions du Sagittaire de París i està dedicat a Nusch, l’esposa de l’autor. Conté un frontispici de Dalí reproduït en aiguafort en els quinze primers exemplars, impresos en paper Chine i Hollande. Segons el colofó, el llibre es va acabar d’imprimir el 10 de març de 1938 a la impremta d’Henri Jourde de París. El full de mà de Cours naturel va ser redactat per André Breton, que va escriure: “Deslligar, alliberar al cim de la vida i la consciència […] en el gran polvorí del migdia sobre l’ala de la papallona ‘flambejada’, cap a i contra la immensa llàstima d’aquest temps sord als crits esquinçadors que venen de l’Espanya republicana i de molts altres llocs, d’aquest temps, −el nostre!− enterrant-se sota les ruïnes de la llibertat i l’esperança del millor, així com de la més elemental justícia i dignitat; deslligar, alliberar, fer resplendir el que resta i restarà per sempre intacte fins al més profund del cor […] per un COURS NATUREL que res no pot interrompre…” (1). Aquest exemplar, el número 7, imprès sobre paper Hollande, inclou una dedicatòria a la portadella: “à Louis Broder / qui aime les libres / encore plus que moi, / Paul Éluard” (A Louis Broder / a qui li agraden els llibres / encara més que a mi, / Paul Éluard).
