A visual and sound-based performative illusionism show at the Dalí Theatre-Museum, as part of the activities accompanying the exhibition Dalí and Optical Illusions

The watching machine was the name given to 19th-century objects that created illusions using mirrors and shutters. In The Watching Machine, we imagine that the stage itself is an illusion-generating machine. We play with light, shadows and reflections to explore what illusion, representation and theatrical convention are.
A performance for all audiences.
The Macarena Recuerda Shepherd company, driven by artist Lídia Zoilo, explores the possibilities of visual theatre and the mechanisms of perception, inviting us to see the world through different eyes. In The Watching Machine, everyday objects such as mirrors, microphone stands and ribbons become tools for creating unexpected images, impossible figures and spaces that seem to transform before our eyes. Using very simple means, the piece creates a poetic universe in which light, movement and sound take centre stage.
Through visual experimentation, play and surprise, the performance invites us to rediscover our capacity for wonder and to question what we see. What happens when an image splits in two, a shadow comes to life or a reflection makes us doubt reality? The Watching Machine offers a hypnotic, sensory experience that reminds us that looking is also a form of imagining, and that sometimes all it takes is a change in perspective for the world to transform.
