Del tiratge total, setanta-set exemplars van ser il·lustrats amb un frontispici de Salvador Dalí reproduït en heliogravat i imprès pels Ateliers Lacourière. Segons el colofó, el llibre es va acabar d’imprimir el 10 de juny de 1934 a la impremta Grou-Radenez. El títol del llibre fa referència a un episodi del Gènesi (Antic Testament). Onan, un personatge rebel, és condemnat a mort per la justícia divina per haver malgastat la seva llavor i haver-se negat a casar-se amb la vídua del seu germà Er (1). En aquest heliogravat, Dalí fa palesa la seva afinitat amb els versos d’Hugnet, marcats pel desig sexual, la solitud i l’exclusió. En una planxa carregada d’“espasmo-grafismes”, l’artista va inscriure la frase: “’ESPASMO-GRAFISME’ OBTENU AVEC LA MAIN GAUCHE PENDANT / QU'AVEC LA MAIN DROITE JE ME MASTURBE JUSQU'AU SANG / JUSQU'AU L'OS JUSQU'AU HÈLICES DU / CALICE’”. (“‘Espasme-grafisme’ obtingut amb la mà esquerra mentre / amb la mà dreta em masturbo fins a la sang / fins a l’os fins a les hèlixs del / calze”). El tema de l’onanisme, ja present en l’obra pictòrica de l’artista des de 1927, apareix de manera velada a Aparell i mà (Cat. P 195) i s’exposa obertament el 1930 tant en el seu poema El Gran Masturbador com en l’oli Rostre del Gran Masturbador (Cat.
